Iron and Steel Anniversary Gifts: Ideas for the 6th and 11th Anniversaries
Steel is the traditional theme for the 11th wedding anniversary, and iron is widely listed for the 6th (some UK lists give sugar instead). Since mild steel is mostly iron, a plasma-cut steel gift covers both. The best steel anniversary gifts are personal and made to last, such as a plaque with your names and date, the coordinates of a place that matters, or something you'll use together for years. This guide has ideas for each, plus the practical points for ordering a personalised gift in time.
Why iron and steel?
Anniversary themes tend to get stronger as the years go on: paper for the first, then cotton and leather, up to iron and steel, then silver and gold. Iron and steel stand for strength and durability, which is a fitting message for a marriage that has come through its first years. A steel gift is also something you can actually keep on display, rather than a card that goes in a drawer.
Mark the date
The Personalised Wedding Date Plaque is the most direct way to mark the occasion. It has two names (up to 16 characters, such as SARAH & TOM) and a date (up to 10 characters, such as 14.06.2025) cut in stencil letters beneath a small cut-out heart. At 460 × 230 mm, it suits a bedroom wall above the bed, a hallway or the porch of your home.
A place that matters
The Personalised Coordinates Plaque is a quieter, more personal choice. It carries the latitude and longitude of a place, such as where you met, where you got engaged or where you married, in two stencil lines of up to 11 characters each. Only the two of you need to know what the numbers mean. Look up the spot on any online map, note the decimal coordinates, and enter them with the N, S, E or W.
For a growing family
The Personalised Family Name Tree is a leafy steel tree growing from a name plate with two lines: a family name of up to 14 characters, such as THE WILSONS, and a second line of up to 12, such as EST 2015 for the year you married. It works on a hallway wall, above a dining table, or outside by the patio doors.
Something to use together
Not every anniversary gift needs to hang on a wall.
The Personalised Family Name Fire Pit has your name, up to 12 characters, cut into the front panel of a slot-together 4 mm steel fire pit. It's a gift for long evenings outside. Use it on a non-flammable surface such as paving or gravel, never on decking or grass, never leave a fire unattended, and let it cool fully before moving it.
The Flat-Pack Steel Wine Rack (9 Bottles) slots together without tools, and arrives flat, so it's easy to wrap. Pair it with a few bottles for a ready-made gift.
For a shared project
If you built something together, such as a business, a workshop or an allotment, the Personalised Workshop "EST" Sign reads WORKSHOP, then a name of up to 12 characters, then a four-digit year. It gives a shed, garage or garden studio a proper identity.
Getting the personalisation right
Check spelling and spacing. We cut exactly what you enter, so please double-check names, dates and spacing before you order.
Mind the character limit. Our lettering is never smaller than 25 mm tall, so each product has a maximum number of characters, and spaces count. Use an ampersand to save space: SARAH & TOM rather than SARAH AND TOM.
Choose a date format. 14.06.2025 fits the date line comfortably. Written-out dates are often too long.
Pick a stencil style. Stencil Sans is clean and modern. Stencil Serif is a little more traditional.
Personalised items are made to order and can't be returned for a change of mind. Faulty items are covered by your statutory rights.
Indoor or outdoor, and which finish?
Most of these gifts come in satin black, anthracite grey or raw steel. Satin black and anthracite grey are powder coated for a durable coloured finish, which is the best choice indoors and on painted or rendered walls. Raw steel will rust outdoors to an orange-brown patina, and some couples choose that on purpose for a garden wall. Indoors, raw steel stays closer to its original colour, but it can mark walls and fabrics. See our care and finishes page.
